How do I Dispose of my old Computer Equipment?

As you may know, Seras provides computer and general information technology support all across the Midlands - from Lexington to Sumter and from Newberry to Irmo and Southeast Columbia! Along with day to day managed services and general troubleshooting, we are often asked about disposing of old computers and related technology equipment. Just the other day, a customer in Irmo asked, “How much does it cost and what should I do about recycling some of our old computers?” The great news is that there is a local, free solution to this problem (since electronics and related equipment can no longer be sent to landfills with typical garbage services)!

Fortunately, the city of Columbia offers an e-waste recycling drop-off service located in downtown Columbia. All for free! There you can drop off all of your old computers, televisions, monitors, printers, fax machines, and other related equipment for safe recycling and disposal.

The address for the drop off location is 2910 Colonial Dr, Columbia, SC 29203.

What do I need to do before recycling my old computer?

We recommend removing hard drives and other items that may contain sensitive data before disposing of any computers or related equipment. You can have your old hard drives permanently destroyed or you can store them in a secure location. This will protect any of your data from falling into the wrong hands. We also recommend checking the hours of operation due to Covid-19 and changes in work schedules and access.
